Tvärkulturell fostran : Svensk-italienska ungdomars erfarenhet av att växa upp med två kulturer

- The present study dealt with what occurs in a social-cultural rearing-process when the parents derive from two different cultural traditions. It is a qualitative case study, with an ethnographically inspired approach, which considers processes rather than outcome, context rather than any specific variable and discovery rather than confirmation. The empirical data consist of interviews made with 41 young women and men in Rome, Italy and the Lund-Malmö-region in southern Sweden. Focus is on their particular experiences of having been brought up by a Swedish mother and an Italian father. An interpretative hermeneutic analysis of the empirical data resulted in various thematizations representing the main aspects expressed by the informants.... (More)

These thematizations could also be said to represent main characteristics in Swedish and Italian upbringing. The informants expressed contentment with being brought up with two countries different cultural values. They also showed a strong awareness of their identity and of various aspects of the content in their upbringing. Thematizations like independence and freedom as representative for Swedish upbringing and family-belonging and family-support together with the evident confirmation of love, as representative for Italian upbringing, belonged to the most important qualities mentioned by the informants. The main result in this studied example of cross-cultural education can be seen as a successful combination of Swedish and Italian culture where the differences in both traditions have enriched and benefited each other. The identity created has been described with words like trust, independence and flexibility. (Less)
