- This dissertation analyses noble estate owners in the local community in the Swedish age of Greatness. The study elucidates how the nobility exercised power in everyday life, beyond wars, national politics, and the grand political events on the continent. Applying a comparative perspective, the study focuses on the provinces of Östergötland and Skåne at the end of the seventeenth century. - This dissertation analyses noble estate owners in the local community in the Swedish age of Greatness. The study elucidates how the nobility exercised power in everyday life, beyond wars, national politics, and the grand political events on the continent. Applying a comparative perspective, the study focuses on the provinces of Östergötland and Skåne at the end of the seventeenth century. Guiding perspectives in this dissertation are: (1)conditions within the elite in the studied provinces and (2) the relation between the estate-owning nobility and the people.The first part of the dissertation is quantitative in character. It paints an overall picture of the landowners int the studied areas. The noble estate owners are distinguished, using Max Weber´s tripartite scale, in order to capture the social, economic, and political elites in the landowning circle in the studied provinces. In economic terms they are classified through their landed properties. The political dimension is illuminated by studying their local connections to the state and whether they dominated the local administration and the regional armed forces, in the provinces. The second part of the dissertation focuses on different strata within the nobility, with case studies of three families of provincial nobles, their lifestyle, how they viewd themselves, and the framework within which they operated. I analyse how the families of Drake, Lillie and Barnekow performed in local spiritual and temporal arenas. One one hand I examine their artefact culture and personal performance in the parish church. On the other hand I examine the significance of the three families within the regional judicla apparatus, with the focus on the district court. Taken together, these microstudies shed light on the estate owners in the district court, as baptismal sponsors and as patron lords in church contexts, and the contemporary rhetoric as reflected in forms of address they used in letters.The artefact culture studied in the churches consists of sepulchral chapels, magnificent coffins, fonts, and other donations to the church. In addition, attention is focused on wedding odes, funeral sermons, and funeral arrangements. From a gender perspective, the in.depth cultural studies also investigate the significance of the noble women in local and regional contexts. (Less)
