Discourse, Environmental Policy, and Perceptions of the Environment: A Case from the Faroes

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to begin a discussion on what role Environmental Humanities might play in policy-making, and in negotiating alternative ways of engaging with the environment in general, in the Faroe Islands. To approach these issues, it is necessary first to deal with what the absence of Environmental Humanities means in the Faroes and what Environmental Humanities would mean in a Faroese context. Departing from the presupposition that humans and human societies engage with the environment through culture, I argue that rapid and large-scale changes in production and subsistence patterns in the Faroes have left a cultural void in human-environmental relations. Traditional ways of engaging with the environment are often perceived as relics from the past, and ultimately in the way of progress, and alternatives seem only to come in some form of ecological modernization, which fit smoothly into the overarching discourses on growth. For reasons that will be discussed, the concerned public has not organized around environmental issues to the extent seen in other Nordic countries, and environmental issues have not ranked high on either political or scientific agendas, particularly not in the social and human sciences.
