Malaysian Educational Politics: ‘English Language Policy’ Implementation and Its Impact to Plural Society

- This paper discuss the issue of ‘Teaching Mathematics and Science in English’ Policy implementation in Malaysia, which requires Mathematics and Science to be taught in an English medium in all primary schools, introduced by the government in May 2002. The needs of increased to overcome the declining standard of English contrasted with Malaysian plural society communal identity and mother tongue language education. Due to the complexity of the plural society and different needs of each community in their mother tongue language advocacy, Malaysian government faced a more sensitive situation and need to be more careful in approach these type of issues. Due to the complexity of the plural society and different needs of each community in their mother tongue language advocacy, Malaysian government faced a more sensitive situation and need to be more careful in approach these type of issues. By using the conflict mapping methodology, this paper has analyzed the conflict situation by studying the parties and issues involved. This has helped the author to systematically identify a few of the major factors and impacts of the conflict. The paper also has suggested a few some subjective suggestions for conflict management, which aimed at achieving a win-win solution for all the stakeholders. (Less)
