A Conceptual Evaluation Model for Packaging Logistics in the Retail Supply Chain

Saghir, Mazen LU (2002) 14th Annual NOFOMA Conference, 2002
Abstract
Packaging has a significant impact on the efficiency of logistical systems and therefore, improvements in the retail supply chain can be achieved through the integration and development of the systems of packaging and logistics. In order to enable these improvements, models are needed that facilitate evaluations along the supply chain in order to grasp the whole picture and avoid sub-optimisations. The existing models are fragmented and only suitable for certain stages in the supply chain. This paper discusses and suggests how existing tools, can be used to build a systematic and general evaluation model from a packaging logistics perspective. Further, the concept of packaging logistics is highlighted and explained. Case and field studies... (More)

Case and field studies involving six companies from the Swedish retail supply chain were conducted to identify existing models and investigate the parameters needed for a general model, The paper further discusses what is required to properly evaluate a packaging solution along the supply chain and presents a conceptual analysis model for packaging logistics.
