The course is a joint project with one of the largest trade unions in Sweden, whose members have not previously had access to HE (Svenska Kommunalarbetarförbundet) funded by the National Authority for wider recruitment (Rekryteringsdelegationen) to HEI.

The overall aim of the course is to acquire the knowledge and skills to pursue studies at HEI. The course is 7.5ECTS(5credits). There are five different units of study :
1) Presentation of subjects which can be studied at the University (an overview),
2) Academic learning modes,
3)Adult language development and remedial study for those with reading-and writing disabilities,
4)Oral-and writing communication modes and training, and finally
5)The development of a knowledge of science with emphasis on information retrieval
6)(IR) and critical values.

The course is delivered as a netbased course with some face-to face meetings (in the student’s home district). Problem Based Learning is the dominant learning mode and the students have tutors at the local learning centers. The exam is a written paper which will be discussed during a net seminar.

Svenska Kommunalarbetarförbundet is a trade union with over 600 000 members. In their action plan, HEI is mentioned as the fourth strategic objective of their mission statement and it is also stated that its members have the right to study at HEI. In this first pilot course some 100 union members were selected to participate in the course .
