Heeding the Call of Being: Heidegger on Attention and Authenticity

Ringmar, Erik LU (2015) Heidegger and the Global Age: An International Conference
Abstract
At the start of the 20th century, self-assertion and will-power were recommended as remedies for what was widely seen as the weakness and irresoluteness of people in modern society. The result, was an aggressive and bellicose culture which had disastrous consequences. Although Martin Heidegger shared the same concerns, his conclusions were entirely different. This paper asks why. The answer, in brief, is that Heidegger emphasized attention rather than assertion and that attention, on his account, meant the heeding of the call of Being. By heeding this call, we have the opportunity to be present at the moment when Being comes into beings. Paying heed in this fashion is the meaning of an authentic life.
