abstract     = {{
Groundwater depletion, driven by population growth and climate change, poses a critical challenge to global water security, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. This chapter explores groundwater artificial recharge with unconventional water (GARUW) as a transformative strategy to replenish stressed aquifers. A spectrum of unconventional resources, including treated wastewater, stormwater, desalinated water, produced water from oil/gas operations, agricultural drainage, and atmospheric water (dew/fog), alongside methods such as aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), soil aquifer treatment (SAT), and rainwater harvesting, is reviewed. Moreover, the global opportunities of GARUW, such as enhancing water availability, mitigating floods, improving water quality, and enhancing climate resilience through sustainable storage and ecosystem protection, are discussed. However, significant challenges persist, including water quality risks, energy-intensive processes, hydrogeological constraints, regulatory gaps, public skepticism, and environmental trade-offs. By addressing these challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, GARUW can play a pivotal role in securing water resources for future generations, bridging the gap between scarcity and sustainability in a water-stressed world.
}},
