Semitic languages as heritage languages in Sweden : literacy practices among migrant pupils in an urban primary school context

Avery, Helen LU (2014) Nordiska semitistsymposiet
Abstract
Primary school pupils in a multiethnic urban neighbourhood in Sweden were interviewed about their use of various languages in and out of school, leisure time activities and attitudes to languages. The children's motivations for learning the heritage languages varied. Opportunities for learning to read and write were generally limited outside school, but reading for pleasure nevertheless showed potential as a way to support language development in the heritage language. More stimulating children's literature was available in Arabic than in Assyrian/Syriac.
