From pupils' reading habits to teachers' working conditions : research on prerequisites for educational development in mother tongue instruction

Avery, Helen LU (2015) Arabic heritage language pupils: experiences from Sweden and Denmark
Abstract
The particular conditions surrounding teaching Arabic as an immigrant minority in Sweden create numerous tensions between the pupils needs, on the one hand, and the subject Arabic as it is offered (as Mother Tongue Studies within the Swedish school system), on the other. These tensions are aggravated by the marginalised status of Mother Tongue Studies and by insufficient support given to the teachers.
