abstract = {{Key Points from the Chapter

- Places perceived as unsafe are sometimes characterized by high levels of crime, sometimes by low levels of crime, and at times by high levels of poverty, while in other cases poverty levels are low.
- Social disorder, including the presence of individuals perceived as disruptive, intimidating, or dangerous, is a common factor contributing to perceptions of unsafety.
- Unsafe places appear to fall into several recurring categories: the central square, parks and green spaces, schools and sports facilities, and disadvantaged neighborhoods.
- These types of unsafe places differ considerably in terms of the number of people present, the concentration of restaurants and shops nearby, the prevalence of crime and disorder, and the characteristics of the surrounding residential population.
- In disadvantaged neighborhoods, a particularly important factor appears to be the area's reputation, with perceptions of unsafety often being based less on direct personal experiences of the area.}},
