Backcasting the SDG wedding cake : implications for Industry 5.0 deployment in agri-food supply chains
(2027) In Routledge Companions in Business and Management- Abstract
- Background and Aim: This study aims to identify if and how Industry 5.0 technologies support achieving SDG-2 in relation to agri-food supply chains. There is need for this research as the deadline for achieving the SDGs looms large in 2030, and progress toward the SDG-2 targets has been unsatisfactory.
Research Design and Methods: This research employs an agri-food supply chain-oriented approach to backcasting the SDGs in which Industry 5.0 is considered to comprise of discontinuous innovations. The focus is on analysing six dominant consumer trends expected to continue into 2030.
Findings: Agri-food supply chains need to advance beyond linear distribution within information silos to digital transformation (Industry 5.0)... Research Design and Methods: This research employs an agri-food supply chain-oriented approach to backcasting the SDGs in which Industry 5.0 is considered to comprise of discontinuous innovations. The focus is on analysing six dominant consumer trends expected to continue into 2030.
Findings: Agri-food supply chains need to advance beyond linear distribution within information silos to digital transformation (Industry 5.0) for there to be prospect of achieving SDG-2 by 2030. The related causal path is illustrated.
Research Limitations: Using agri-food food supply chain strategies to offset world hunger by the backcasting method is methodologically limited by the quality and diversity of data available. The theoretical scope of the study is limited to six dominant trends in consumer demand that are expected to continue into 2030. Theoretical
Contribution: The theoretical contribution explains the strategic process by which agri-food supply chains can implement Industry 5.0 technologies towards the achievement of the SDGs using the knowledge-based theory of the firm extended to supply chains.
Contribution to UN SDGs: This research contributes to advancing progress on SDG-2 and related SDGs.
Practical impact: Business and other stakeholders will better understand the process of implementing Industry 5.0 technologies to reflect the ambitions of SDG-2 related to consumer trends. (Less)
