Abstract
Given the currently unstable situation within the EU, many scholars and politicians are questioning the possibility of the Union’s further federative development. However, there are eminent political figures who strongly hold on to an idea of a United States of Europe. Viviane Reding, member of the EU parliament, is one of these political figures who is strongly articulating a federative vision for the future of European integration.

The aim of this thesis is to conduct an in-depth analysis of Reding's political ideas and arguments regarding the European integration process, as it was articulated in her political speech "Now we need a United States of Europe".

To do this, the methods idea and ideology analysis with elements of argumentation analysis have been used.

This thesis concludes that the purpose of Reding’s speech is not primarily to convince, but rather to inspire, which gives her the liberty to speak freely about her visions without feeling the need to win people over. She focuses on expressing her believes rather than campaigning for more supporters. Her arguments refer above all to reasons and her main argument is that one cannot create a monetary union without a parallel political entity. She has many federalist ideas especially of how European politicians should act. The main idea is to introduce a political system similar to that of the United States to be able to keep together the European Union, a United States of Europe. In the end, it is concluded that Reding’s visions and believes are not only inspirational but de facto convincing as well, which is a unique and powerful combination in itself. (Less)
