abstract = {{This thesis critically examines the Swedish cement industry, comprised of Heidelberg Materials Cement Sverige AB (HMCS), through a discourse analysis of their public communications i.e. press releases, articles and web pages. The aim is to research what discourses HMCS participates in and how they participate in different discourses in regards to their sustainability work. The Swedish cement industry depends on limestone quarrying - which takes place in Site, Gotland. The thesis concerns how HMCS justifies quarrying and a large release of carbon dioxide despite effects on nature and the climate. The results show that HMCS participates in discourses in relation to infrastructure, emphasizing a social need for cement. HMCS also participates in discourses around technology and technological solutions, emphasizing carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a solution. HMCS furthermore participates in discourses around effects on nature by emphasizing a necessity in limestone quarrying. Through the use of language HMCS constructs a reality which presupposes a societal role of cement and limestone quarrying, emphasizing the need for a continued existence of the cement industry.}},
