abstract = {{The aim of this thesis was to investigate how the dimensions, placement and orientation of a combustible material can affect both fire characteristics such as flame height and heat release rate, and material characteristics such as surface lining classification. The extent of the effects was examined using a simplified version of a Single Burning Item (SBI) test. Several experiments were conducted in which 20 percent of the walls in the test facility were covered with combustible material. For each test, the dimensions, placement and orientation of the material were varied in order to identify their effects on the fire- and material characteristics. The result showed that the mean flame height varied only marginally between the tests. The highest heat release rates were generally observed when the tested material was narrow rather than wide, positioned close to the fire source, and orientated vertically. One of the tests resulted in a lower surface lining classification than the others. In conclusion, the dimensions, placement and orientation of a combustible material primarily affect fire characteristics, particularly heat release rate, and may also influence the material characteristics such as surface lining classification.}},
