abstract = {{Voluntary engagement is a central aspect of Swedish student life, where many students invest significant time and energy in unpaid work alongside their studies. Despite the absence of financial compensation, such engagement remains both extensive and long-lasting. We aim to answer questions such as, what motivates students to participate and what factors contribute to sustaining their involvement over time. This study examines voluntary student engagement within student nation activities, focusing on motivational and psychological factors. Using a quantitative survey design based on responses from 76 participants this study explores how experiences of meaning, personal development, and other key motivational drivers relate different levels of engagement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analyses to examine the relationships between engagement and various motivational and resource-related factors. The results indicate that student engagement is most strongly associated with experiences of meaningfulness and personal development, while autonomy appears to play a more limited role in this context. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of voluntary engagement in a student-driven and socially oriented context, an area that has received limited attention in previous research.}},
