  abstract     = {{Bror Gadelius (1862-1938) was one of the key figures in Swedish psychiatry during the first quarter of the twentieth century and was in part responsible for the standardization of the discipline. He was an active writer who produced a standard textbook in Swedish on psychiatry while also tackling other subjects beyond the domain of the discipline. With emotionology as a method this study aims to expand the current understanding of Gadelius as a historical figure while also shedding light on emotions historical contingency. The analysis shows how emotions played an important role for Gadelius in his understanding of both society and the individual. Emotions became the opposite of reason, something to be controlled while also serving as a marker of what was the definition of health, sickness and normality. His emotional view strongly correlates to a dominant bourgeois culture in which he was situated.}},
