  abstract     = {{This bachelor’s thesis explores how safety is experienced at Helsingborg Central Station (Helsingborg C) from a gender perspective. The aim is to analyse how women and men perceive safety in and around the station area and how these perceptions are influenced by both physical and social environmental factors. The study also seeks to identify which elements contribute most strongly to feelings of insecurity and to highlight potential measures that could improve safety for all travellers.
The research is based on a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative data. Information was collected through a digital survey with 73 respondents, ten semi-structured interviews, and systematic field observations conducted at different times of the day and evening. This methodological combination allowed for comparisons between overall patterns of perceived safety and deeper personal experiences.
The results show clear gender differences. During daytime, 64 % of women and 80 % of men reported feeling safe, while at night these figures decreased to 22 % and 46 % respectively. Women often associated insecurity with darkness, social disorder, and the presence of men or intoxicated individuals, whereas men linked insecurity to crime, disorder, and the general reputation of the area. Women were also more likely to adapt their behaviour—by changing routes, avoiding tunnels, or travelling with company—while men described safety as a matter of personal control and situational awareness.
The analysis indicates that safety at Helsingborg C is shaped through the interplay of spatial, social, and symbolic dimensions. Poor lighting, deserted areas, and limited visibility all contribute to insecurity, but social norms and gendered behaviours also play a decisive role. The study concludes that safety should not be understood solely as an individual responsibility, but as a collective condition that must be integrated into the planning and design of public transport environments to promote inclusivity, equality, and social sustainability.}},
