  abstract     = {{This thesis addresses the transition towards a sustainable food system as called for by the European Green Deal (from now on referred to as EUGD) and the accompanying Farm to Fork Strategy (from now on referred to as F2F). Such a transition should, according to the EUGD, explicitly involve profound changes. The thesis examines the extent to which the profound changes referred to make alternative ways of organising and governing food supply possible. The analysis is conducted through a comparison between the EUGD, F2F, and their legal expression in the Strategic Plans Regulation on the one hand, and principles of food sovereignty on the other.

The thesis begins by presenting the concept of food sovereignty, both as an expanded right to food and as a strategy for creating genuine food security through a food system that places people and nature at the centre. This strategy is then concretised through six principles that together describe how the food system can be organised to achieve food sovereignty.
Thereafter, the EUGD, F2F, and the development of the common agrivulture policy (from now on referred to as CAP) are addressed, from being seen as any industry and solely focused on production, to coming to include a more holistic view of the food system and including social as well as environmental and climate-related objectives. The interaction between the EUGD, F2F, and the CAP is then presented.

In the main part of the thesis, it is examined whether the EUGD, F2F, and their legal expression in the Strategic Plans Regulation reflect the principles of food sovereignty. The analysis shows that the elements that would be in line with food sovereignty are often vague, weakly steering, or left to Member States to choose not to apply.
