abstract = {{Cognitive ability is a central aspect of child development, and is commonly
assessed using standardized psychological tests or rating scales. How well
these different methods correlate remains unclear, particularly in young
children. In clinical practice, proxy ratings are often used when administering
questionnaires to younger children, as they are assumed to have limited
self-report reliability. The extent to which young children can meaningfully
self-report on cognitive functioning remains understudied. The Pediatric
Quality of Life Cognitive Functioning Scale (PedsQL CFS) is one of few
scales including a self-report version for preschool-aged children. It has not
previously been validated against more objective cognitive measures. The
present study aimed to examine the relationship between children’s
self-reported cognitive functioning, parental ratings, and psychometrically
measured cognitive ability. A cross-sectional, correlational design was used.
The study included 24 five-year-old children who were part of a larger
project’s normative sample. Cognitive ability was assessed using the Wechsler
Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV).
Perceived cognitive functioning was measured with PedsQL CFS, completed
by children and parents. Associations were analyzed using non-parametric
correlation analyses, paired t-tests, and intraclass correlation coefficients. The
results showed no significant associations between rating scales and
psychometrically measured cognitive ability. A modest association was found
between children’s and parental ratings. The findings suggest that the
instruments capture different aspects of cognitive functioning. Young
children’s self-reports should be interpreted with caution, but may provide
complementary information. The study highlights the importance of using
multiple assessment methods to understand cognitive functioning in
childhood.}},
