  abstract     = {{What can monuments do as communicative and imaginative media? This thesis exemplifies
how counter-monuments present an entry point for Media and Communication scholars to re-
conceptualise traditional monuments, shifting the focus from a noun to a processual verb based on conviviality. Accordingly, using a case-study methodology informed by Flyvbjerg’s (2001) and Dewey’s (1934) pragmatic understanding of research and art as experience, and extended by the concept of conviviality (Deniz, 2024; Illich, 1973), this thesis sheds light on what a monument does. I conducted a case study of the counter-monument Master Narratives, which is scheduled for installation in Jesusparken (Falsterboplan), Malmö, later this year. This counter-monument represents the final phase of an anti-racist project initiated by Malmö-based activists in 2019 to promote public discourse on anti-racism. Interviews were conducted with six actors engaged
with the project, complemented by a qualitative content analysis of the documentary film
Letters to a Serial Killer. This film mediates one of the project’s traumatic origins: Kamal Masri’s experience as a victim of the racist serial killer Peter Mangs.
To explore what monuments can do as media, this thesis presents an answer to the following research question: ‘How does the Master Narratives counter-monument mediate and transform anti-racist knowledge?´. The findings suggest that Master Narratives is mediated and discussed imaginatively, emotionally, and through practice, transforming the counter-monument from a physical structure into a convivial medium and a processual space-time. In this space, anti-racist knowledge is actively co-produced rather than passively received, pointing to how the narration of experiences and resistances to racism can be pluralised through a convivial medium, promoting “reflexive monitoring”, learning, and “an exercise of responsibility” (Frank, 1995, p. 16).}},
