  abstract     = {{This thesis examines how archivists perceive different archival spaces, with an emphasis on physical and digital archives. The study is based on four semi-structured interviews with Swedish archivists who all work in public archives. A key aim of the research has been to let the informants reflect on how the various archival environments make them feel – and which of the senses they invoke – rather than asking questions regarding how the work itself is done. By using a combination of existential philosophy, and findings from the digital research field, the study can conclude that the different spaces affect not only the archivist’s concept of self, but also of storage space, social belonging and control. With this phenomenological and existential approach, the study provides a deeper understanding of archivists’ unique relationship to the physical archive and accentuates the importance of further, and perhaps more unconventional, research within the realm of digital archives.}},
