  abstract     = {{Parenting behaviours and family functioning are important aspects of family life that may be shaped by a variety of contextual factors, including self- and interpersonal functioning. Using a contemporary dimensional approach to personality pathology, this thesis investigates if the overall level of personality dysfunction, as well as the trait domain specifier of Negative Affectivity, are associated with aversive parenting behaviours and family functioning from both a parent and child perspective. Level of personality functioning was measured through parent-reports using the Level of Personality Functioning – Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0), while Negative Affectivity and Antagonism were measured through the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 - Brief Form (PID-5 BF). Aversive parenting behaviour was measured through child and parent-reports using the Psychological Maltreatment Scale (PSY), and family functioning was measured using the General Functioning 6-Item Subscale (GF6+). Associations were analysed using Spearman’s rank correlation. Results showed that parental level of personality functioning was not significantly associated with aversive parenting behaviours, but that a higher level of paternal Negative Affectivity was associated with higher levels of parental aversive behaviours perceived by children. Furthermore, overall level of parental personality dysfunction was negatively associated with family functioning from both a parent and child perspective. The mean level of Negative Affectivity in parents, as well as maternal Negative Affectivity, was also significantly and negatively associated with family functioning from both a parent and child perspective. The findings are partially in line with previous research and provide new insights in the sparse field of dimensional personality functioning in relation to parent and family dynamics.}},
