  abstract     = {{This thesis investigates fatigue assessment of tightening bolts in gasketed plate
heat exchangers, with particular focus on the discrepancy between conservative
code-based predictions and the long service lives observed in practice. The work
addresses two fatigue contributions: high-cycle operational loading and larger-amplitude assembly loading. For the operational loading, the study examines whether the statistical interpretation of existing bolt fatigue data may be overly conservative. For the assembly loading, a local strain-based assessment route is explored using analytical modelling and finite element analysis. A structured literature review, finite element modelling, and a proposed experimental test strategy are combined to establish a technically defensible basis for a more representative fatigue evaluation of tightening bolts in this application.}},
