abstract = {{The vacuum brazing process was found to have an impact on the corrosion and mechanical properties of the austenitic stainless steel 316L. Although, the effect of heat treatment has been investigated previously, the impact of the nitrogen pressure in the vacuum furnace remains insufficiently understood. Therefore, this study examines two different coils of 316L stainless steel heat treated in three different vacuum brazing cycles with varying amounts of nitrogen content. The properties of the stainless steel was investigated by their corrosion, compositional and mechanical properties. The corrosion properties were evaluated by their pitting corrosion resistance, with methods as ferric chloride immersion test, pitting potential and critical pitting temperature analysis. The compositional and microstructural properties of the steel were evaluated by SEM, EDX, OM and XRD. The mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile and fatigue tests. These results indicate that a higher nitrogen pressure in the furnace elevate the corrosion and mechanical resistance of 316L stainless steel. The mechanical performance was also affected by the grain growth of the samples. The grain growth is dependent on alloying elements such as titanium, molybdenum and aluminium and the length of the vacuum brazing process. The coil with a higher chromium content had higher pitting corrosion resistance, both before and after vacuum brazing. The coil with smaller grain size had stronger mechanical strength.}},
