abstract = {{Although the relationship between education and hygiene has received much attention,
few studies have examined it in the context of Senegal. Using data from the
Demographic and Health Surveys Program, this paper investigates the relationship
between educational attainment and handwashing frequency among 9,012 individuals
aged 15 and above, while accounting for information access, wealth status, and type of
place of residence. The study also inquires how COVID-19 influenced handwashing
behaviours in Senegal. The results show that soap availability is a stronger predictor of
frequent handwashing than education, and that other determinants do not
meaningfully contribute to the outcome. Pandemics prove to be a powerful driver of
behavioural change across all education groups, though soap availability largely shapes
the effect, suggesting that public health awareness tends to increase during crisis
periods.}},
