  abstract     = {{Heavy metal contamination in the environment and food systems is an important issue from both environmental and food safety perspectives. Traditional methods for metal removal are often chemical based and may be resource intensive, creating a need for more sustainable biological alternatives. Lactic acid bacteria, including Weissella sp. have in previous studies demonstrated the potential to bind metal ions through biosorption. 

The aim of this study was to investigate whether Weissella sp. could reduce the concentration of copper and aluminum ions at different concentrations and incubation times. The study was conducted as an experimental in vitro investigation, where bacterial growth was monitored using OD600 measurements and metal concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically after centrifugation and separation of the supernatant. 

The results showed that Weissella sp. Was able to grow in the presence of both copper and aluminum. For copper, statistically significant reductions in concentration were observed after 6 hours of incubation, suggesting an initial interaction between the bacteria and copper ions. The aluminium results were less reliable, as the analytical method was strongly affected by pH changes, which complicated interpretation of the results. 

Overall, the findings indicate that Weissella sp. may have the potential to interact with metal ions, particularly copper, but further studies with more robust and standardized methodology are required to confirm these findings and evaluate possible future applications in biological metal remediation.}},
