  abstract     = {{Ethylene oxidation over Pd nanoparticles in an ambient pressure environment was studied. While modulating the temperature in an ethylene-oxygen mixture, operando ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed an oscillating thickness of a PdC_x layer surrounding the nanoparticles while producing CO and CO_2. Scanning electron microscopy before and after the measurement revealed the formation of carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes are likely caused by the removal of carbon from the nanoparticles. The carbon is removed during the cooling half of the temperature cycle.}},
