  abstract     = {{Background:
The Construction sector is globally one of the most resource-intensive sectors that accounts for significant material consumption and waste generation. Approximately 10% of Sweden’s construction and demolition waste consists of material waste. Alongside this 30 -35% of the total production costs are linked to waste and spillage. 

Purpose and research questions:
The study aims to analyze and investigate to which extent Lean Construction and its methods can reduce material waste in the construction sector and to identify the factors and causes of material waste. The research questions are: 

•How and to what extent can Lean Construction reduce material waste, climate impact and inefficient resource use?
•Which stages of the construction process generate material waste and what are the primary causes?
•Which organizational factors influence the implementation of Lean Construction?

Theoretical foundation and methodology:
This study is a literature review following Säfsten and Gustavsson’s stepwise methodology. The study consists of two analytical tracks, one for Lean Construction and one for material waste. These two tracks are then subsequently combined. The material sources are primarily scientific articles, previous theses and reports.

Result and Analysis:
Material waste originates from an interplay between design-, planning-, and production phases. Design errors alongside poor coordination between different disciplines have been proved to be of particular significance. The Lean- tools Last Planner System, Just-in-Time, 5S and Value Stream Mapping have shown a clear ability to reduce waste and to provide that the Lean approach is implemented across the entire organization. Critical success factors that have been identified are management commitment and education at all levels in the organization. 

Conclusion:
Lean Construction offers substantial opportunities for reducing material waste in the construction industry. However, its full potential is only achieved when the philosophy is applied and implemented as a whole, not as isolated and individual tools. The main identified barriers are insufficient management support, limited or inadequate knowledge, and lastly resistance to change.}},
