abstract = {{The purpose of this thesis is to present a nuanced perspective on the literary canon, a current and controversial topic, by examining the reasoning of upper secondary school teachers. To answer the research questions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven teachers of Swedish regarding three themes, namely selection of works, political context, and didactic potential. The theoretical framework consists of Tomas Englund’s educational philosophies and Louis Althusser’s ideological state apparatuses. The results show that teachers prioritize the aesthetic values of literature over other aspects, that they believe that the government’s new canon may benefit newly qualified teachers, and that they prefer to alternate between using classics and modern works in their teaching. Furthermore, the results indicate that teachers strongly believe in an unofficial canon, which broadly aligns with the official canon, and that they take a favourable view of the government’s new reading lists. On the other hand, they are critical of certain aspects of a canon and negative toward the idea of incorporating it into the national curriculum. Some conclusions drawn from this study are that the literary canon has a strong, though unofficial, status in upper secondary education but that it changes over time and that more studies are needed to investigate this current topic.}},
