abstract = {{The paper studies the development of the Swedish conscript welfare system against the backdrop of the trade-union like conscript movement and the prevalence of mental illness and deaths among conscripts during the middle of the Cold War. The main analysis is divided into three parts. Its first part relates to mental illness and deaths among conscripts utilizing printed statistics and registries made by Swedish military personnel as the source material. The second part comprises a study of a select number of Swedish newspapers' reactions to the foundation of the Swedish conscript movement 1968-1969. The third and final part studies the mobilization of said conscript movement to create positive change within the conscript system during the years 1971-1972 utilizing a newspaper written by conscripts as the source material. The paper falls within the field of military welfare history and has a particular focus on the welfare-warfare nexus, or the close relationship between military expansion and the development of welfare states. The conscript movement is analysed utilizing resource mobilization theory. The paper condludes that the Swedish conscript system during the period 1959-1972 was characterized by change and gradual improvement. Further, it concludes that said change was likely the result of the conscripts themselves. Additionally, the paper is first in mapping and compiling death statistics and statistics relating to mental illness among Swedish conscripts during the period.}},
