There are divergent opinions on the emergence of the genre; however, the time frame established in this dissertation spans from 1990 until the present moment. One of the principal characteristic of neo-Victorian novels is that through their Victorian setting they display their involvement with contemporary issues. Such an engagement can be expressed in a variety of ways, yet a common approach involves a reimagining<br /> of marginalized voices. This paper will focus on representations of real and<br /> fictitious Victorian women in four neo-Victorian novels: Sarah Waters&#39; Tipping the Velvet(1998); Belinda Starling&#39;s The Journal of Dora Damage (2006); Jude Morgan&#39;s Charlotte and Emily: A novel of the Brontës (2010); and A.S. Byatt&#39;s Possession: A Romance (1990). The analysis of each novel is divided into three parts, which focus on authorship/autobiography, sexuality, as well as independence and occupation. Väl använda verktyg och aspekter inom den klassiska skräcklitteraturen presenteras och förklaras även, nämligen gotiken, begreppet ”det fantastiska” och monster i skräck. La habitación oscura es el lugar más seguro para los personajes de la novela, y es justamente la oscuridad que crea esta seguridad. Sin embargo, a lo largo de la novela entra la luz en la habitación y así la habitación pierde su valor de seguridad. Es por culpa de la lealtad que la luz entra en la habitación y destruye la oscuridad y la seguridad. The analysed texts were rated according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which is a widespread and language-independent document commonly used to assess communicative competence based on six main proficiency levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2). More specifically, the present study aims at comparing texts placed on different CEFR levels within the same language as well as samples from the same CEFR levels across different languages, in relation to linguistic complexity (i.e. the ability to use elaborate structures) and accuracy (i.e. correctness) (Housen &amp; Kuiken, 2009). The targeted linguistic phenomena are subject-verb agreement and subordination, as it is hypothesised that the former is an indicator of accuracy, whereas the latter can be used to measure complexity (Norris &amp; Ortega, 2009). <br /> <br /> The data set consisted of email messages and narrative texts in English (N=24) and French (N=24) written by learners who were between 15 and 19 years old. All the data were manually coded for T-units (i.e. a measure referring to a main clause and all its associated dependent clauses) and clause-types by means of the CLAN toolbox (MacWhinney, 2000). This enabled a measuring of the complexity of the samples, as well as an examination of the kinds of subordinate clauses produced by the informants. The current investigation also contains an accuracy analysis based on the proportion of correct present tense verb forms in the texts. <br /> <br /> According to the present findings, the analysed samples are relatively homogenous with regard to linguistic complexity, as the selected complexity measures only yielded statistically significant differences between the English B1 and the French A2 samples. Se propone en este estudio comprobar la hipótesis de que los espacios blancos en los salmos, creados por la aplicación del verso libre, se pueden identificar como momentos de silencio cuyos significados se determinan con la ayuda de las palabras, los puntos suspensivos tanto como los signos interrogatorios y exclamatorios. En el marco teórico se establece una definición del silencio, la cual se basa en exposiciones sobre él en la poesía moderna. El análisis abarca cuatro salmos en los cuales se identifican varios tipos de silencio: el que precede y el que sigue a la palabra tanto como el que contribuye a crear estructura gráfica que influye en el mensaje comunicado. En la discusión, los resultados se juntan y se discuten en relación con estudios anteriores de Salmos. La interpretación del silencio como presente en los salmos da testigo a un aumento de sentimientos expresados, lo que aprueba el uso de ellos en la comunicación con Dios. El silencio también contribuye a un acercamiento del salmista a su pueblo y contexto, de acuerdo con el punto de vista de la teología de la liberación, y tiene como consecuencia que el lector es incluido en el proceso de creación de los salmos. Dados los resultados del análisis y la discusión la hipótesis se considera comprobada. This thesis focuses on the presence and significance of silence in the poetic work The Psalms of Struggle and Liberation (1964), by the Nicaraguan liberation theologian Ernesto Cardenal, in which the biblical psaltery constitutes the base for a contextual interpretation. This study aims to prove the hypothesis that the white spaces in the psalms, created by the application of free verse, are possible to identify as silent moments whose significance can be recognized with the help of words, suspension points as well as question and exclamation marks. In the theoretical framework a definition of silence is established based on expositions about it in modern poetry. The analysis examines four psalms in which different types of silence are identified: that which precedes and that which follows the word as well as that which contributes to create graphic structure that influences the communicated message. In the discussion, the results are collected and discussed in relation to earlier studies of The Psalms of Struggle and Liberation. The interpretation of silence as present in the psalms gives testimony to an increase of expressed feelings, thus allowing their use in the communication with God. The silence also contributes to an approach of the psalmist to his people and context, in agreement with the perspective of liberation theology, and results in an inclusion of the reader in the creation process of the psalms. Los cuentos en cuestión son “El hombre dormido” (1976) y “El sueño y su eco” (1976) dadas su semejanzas en cuanto a la relación entre mujer y hombre, además de que ambas obras tienen ‘el sueño’ en común. El propósito de esta tesina es estudiar y comparar dos posibles lecturas de los cuentos, una interpretación más básica y textual; y otra interpretación más profunda, con el pasado de la escritora en mente y buscando y analizando símbolos desde otra perspectiva que la más obvia a primera vista. <br /> <br /> Ambas obras elegidas se pueden interpretar de varias formas según la lectura y el enfoque con el que se lea. En “El hombre dormido”, la interpretación más lógica es la de un hombre pintando un cuadro de un hombre dormido. Pero llevando la interpretación un paso más lejos, se analizará el cuento como si se tratara de una mujer pintando un autorretrato de sí misma en forma de hombre. En la otra obra, “El sueño y su eco”, la interpretación más obvia a primera vista es la de una madre cortándole el pelo a su hija frente a un espejo, mientras la niña piensa en una pesadilla que ha tenido. Pero aquí la otra interpretación será que el cuento trata la transición de la vida a la muerte. Estas son las hipótesis que se intentarán comprobar en esta tesina con la ayuda de citas sacadas de los cuentos para reforzar las ideas, y utilizando la comparación de las interpretaciones previamente mencionadas como método. Dado que ambos cuentos tratados en esta tesina están escritos por la misma autora, se pueden ver similitudes entre ambos, de ahí que en este trabajo se busquen similitudes dentro del género literario fantástico feminista, y qué es lo que lleva a dicha interpretación. Otra semejanza digna de analizar es ¿qué significado tiene el sueño en cada cuento? Además surge la pregunta de por qué “El hombre dormido” está escrito en masculino, por lo que se pasará a buscar la respuesta a esto.<br /> <br /> El análisis detenido de ambos cuentos han permito comprobar las hipótesis, llegando a la conclusión que ambos cuentos contienen una crítica social contra los sistemas patriarcales. This study parts from comparing two different kinds of readings of two short stories publicized under the literary gender fantastic feminism, and written by one of the most well-known authors in this genre, the Puerto-Rican Rosario Ferré. The stories analyzed are “El hombre dormido” (1976) (Man asleep, mi traducción) and “El sueño y su eco” (1976) (Sleep and its echo, mi traducción) given the similarities between them regarding the relationship between women and men, and the fact that both have the presence of ‘sleep’ in them. The purpose of this thesis is to study and compare two possible readings of the stories, one more basic and textual interpretation; and another deeper interpretation, having the writer’s past in mind and searching and analyzing symbols from a different perspective than the most obvious one at first sight, therefore making the stories to been seen as allegories. <br /> <br /> The hypothesis that guides the author of this thesis is that beyond the literal interpretation of “Man asleep”, seen with a feminist approach, the story can be read as if it’s a woman painting a self-portrait of herself as a man. In the other short story, “Sleep and its echo”, the assumption is that you can read allegorically as the transition from life to death. These are the hypothesis that are attempting to get verified in this thesis with the help of quotations from the stories to reinforce the ideas given, and using comparison of the previously mentioned interpretations as a method. Since both stories covered in this thesis are written by the same author, there are similarities between the two, therefore this thesis searches for similarities within the literary genre fantastic feminism, and what leads to that interpretation. Another resemblance worth of analyzing is: what meaning does the dream have in each short story? Besides, the question of why &quot;Man asleep&quot; is written in masculine emerges, so therefore the reason for this will be analyzed. <br /> <br /> The detailed analysis of both stories has lead to the answer to the hypothesis, concluding that both tales contain a social critique of patriarchal systems.
