Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify and understand the difference between Brunius?, Zettervall's and Graebe's valueing of a historical building, the cathedral of Lund. Between 1833 and 1963 the cathedral of Lund went through three larger restorations. The character of the restorations however differs a lot between the three church architects, Brunius, Zettervall and Graebe. In a time of low interest for the Middle Ages and of many demolitions of churches in the countryside, Brunius stood out as a researcher and an enthusiast of that special time. His restoration was beside a total change of the choir mostly to put the church in order, implemented with continual documentation. His successor and enemy Helgo Zettervall lived in a time of... In a time of low interest for the Middle Ages and of many demolitions of churches in the countryside, Brunius stood out as a researcher and an enthusiast of that special time. His restoration was beside a total change of the choir mostly to put the church in order, implemented with continual documentation. His successor and enemy Helgo Zettervall lived in a time of architectonic perfection of historical monuments, where the authentic historic buildings where sacrificed for esthetic ideals. For example, in his restoration he tore down the whole western part of the church, with the towers, and made a complete work of art, without noticeable documentation. In 1954 Eiler Graebe started his restoration. It got the character of being a mostly indoor material improvement, a replacement of concrete and bricks, mostly Zettervall?s, in benefit for the historically motivated sandstone. He also changed the rest of the interior of the church. During this period the Middle Ages was appreciated. His time requested scientific documentation, so even here. (Less)
