Abstract: The world in which companies are acting today offers challenges in the sense that it is rapidly changing and that a vast amount of information is available. Our aim with this Master's thesis is to investigate what factors constitutes important and basic conditions in a well functioning environmental scanning and how companies strategically can go about to achieve this. In order to highlight and specify how these factors can be applied on a specific company Thule has been our focal point. Thule. In order to achieve this, we have performed interviews with members of the corporate management, the heads of Division?s? sales and marketing. We have also studied strategically important document for Thule. We have done this in the light of the theories and methods of environmental scanning we have studied. Our study has resulted in a set of suggestions for how Thule can optimise its environmental scanning. Our main findings are that in order to achieve an effective environmental scanning the company has to work with its entire information-support, where the specific company and its organisational characteristic has to be in focus. Important parts of the information support are to develop information systems and tools for information retrieval that are logical to its users. The information management perspective is thus a natural ingredient. Furthermore, it is crucial that all employees in the company are fully aware of the importance of their participation in the company's environmental scanning. When applied on Thule we found that Thule primarily has to improve the conditions for documentation of information generated by its environmental scanning and facilitate information retrieval. Furthermore, the management of Thule must strive to implement a common understanding in the company regarding the importance of its environmental scanning and that everyone has to contribute to it.
