Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the public libraries use of their websites in their marketing. Our study is based on the websites of 60 public libraries. The libraries are chosen because of their geographical location in three different provinces? Skåne in the south, Östergötland in the middle and Norrbotten in the north. These three choices enable us to cover densely as well as thinly populated areas, the agricultural district, the woodland and cities of various sizes. Thereby different groups of the population are represented. All of the libraries except one are available on the Internet through their websites. Most of them offer information concerning activities taking place in the physical library. Our general impression is... (More)

Thereby different groups of the population are represented. All of the libraries except one are available on the Internet through their websites. Most of them offer information concerning activities taking place in the physical library. Our general impression is that the libraries have incorporated the Internet into their activities as a channel of information but perhaps fail to see the potential of the website as a marketing device by use of its increased service possibilities and target group adaptation. Our study gives that libraries are inefficient in the way they address their target groups. A number of the target groups mentioned in the Libraries Act are not provided for through the website. A conclusion to be drawn from this is that a majority of the websites offered by libraries function only as an information board for the physical library and not as an alternative, a virtual library.
