This was a giant leap from LOs traditional politics, where the dimension of class had always been considered more important than gender. The present thesis discusses how gender was constructed in LOs discourse after 1990 by analysing their official publications about gender politics called Klass och kön. The key terms in the analysis are continuity and change. Continuity refers to three various themes regarding how a male norm has been characterizing the gender constructions in LOs discourse. All of these three themes can still be found in LOs official publications throughout the 1990s. In order to find traces of change three important political reforms and ideas are observed which LO, as an organisation concerned with gender, should pay attention to but which at the same time challenge their historical gender constructions. The only one of these that really seems to have influenced the way gender is constructed in LOs discourse, is the academic discussion concerning differences and recognition. (Less)
