Stabilization Policy in Sweden and Finland, 1985-2004.

Andersson, Jacob (2006)
Department of Economics
Abstract
This paper investigates whether the reduction in Finland’s macroeconomic variability has been superior to that in Sweden since Finland joined the EMU in 1996. The theoretical aspects of macroeconomic variability, business cycle fluctuations, and stabilization policies are discussed along with issues of relevancy related to the EMU. The analysis compares the variances of the cyclical components of the index of industrial production, the standardized unemployment rate, and the consumer price index. The results reveal that overall the reduction of macroeconomic variability in Sweden has been superior to that in Finland, rather than the opposite.
