Abstract
To be the president of the Council of Ministers in the European Union is a giant political challenge. The country at the helm is in the centre of EU´s decision making process and in the media´s spotlight. What consequences does this situation have for the country that holds the presidency?
In this bachelor thesis I examine if the people’s attitudes towards the European Union changes when their own country is president of the Council of Ministers. To do this I have done an extensive study of the public opinion in the EU15 and an intensive study of the latest presidencies of Sweden, Austria and Portugal.
My main result is that a period as president can affect the public opinion, but only under the right circumstances. For example do small... (More)
