How do social workers describe and reflect upon ethical dilemmas? What strategies are used to handle these contrasts, based on personal values and convictions? Does professional experience matter in choosing these strategies? The material consists of seven qualitative interviews with practicing social workers. A pilot interview was initially conducted with the purpose to enhance and clarify the interview guide and also to test two vignettes that every interviewee had to take a position on. The material is analyzed from the democratic concepts of “civilian courage” and “the official ethos”. The study shows that there are some differences in how the social workers reflect upon their professional role based on the commission of the work. In the cases where the expectations are contradictory, the interviewees experience this as a complicating factor. A respectful approach and humility are values considered as central in the professional work. According to the interviewed social workers, professional experience as well as acquired life experience matter both in professional work and in the choosing of strategies to use in the handling of ethical dilemmas.
