- Abstract (Swedish)
- In an attempt to bridge the gap between the multitude of individuals among consumers and the relatively few varieties of product design intended to suit these users, 'Accommodating Individuality' explores a few different theoretical approaches. Traditional and new forms of user involvement, including participatory design and menuing, are examined but found to fall short in several aspects of the original ambition of the work. Another approach, to design a certain degree of ambiguity into objects, seems promising at first but poses several problems when it comes to implementation and decision making. The final approach utilizes the concept of appropriation, as introduced by Perla Korosec-Serfaty within the field of architecture where she... (More)

Another approach, to design a certain degree of ambiguity into objects, seems promising at first but poses several problems when it comes to implementation and decision making. The final approach utilizes the concept of appropriation, as introduced by Perla Korosec-Serfaty within the field of architecture where she uses the concept as a framework for how we relate to our surrounding space. In 'Accommodating Individuality', the concept of appropriation is reduced and simplified to become easier to implement in a product design process. In the final chapters, the appropriation method of bridging the user-product gap is put to the test through its implementation in the design of a Blu-ray Disc player. (Less)
