- The purpose of this essay is, with the help of discourse theory presented by Laclau and Mouffe and with the methodological practice inspired by Ulf Mörkenstam, to find the dominating structure (hegemony) in discourse concerning meat consumption related to climate change issues in Swedish politics. In the reality of this new meat discourse, the suggestions of political measurements are differing correspondingly to the different definitions of the problems. Thus the search for these formulated problems, reasons and solutions, with the material consisting of two core documents: first a motion about meat consumption and climate change encouraging the idea of “Meat-free Mondays” that arose large debate, and second, a report from the Agency of Nature (Naturvårdsverket) about possible political actions. The finding is that it is a dispute within political parties whether or not to support the incitement of “Meat-free Mondays” and increased regulations in the food-consuming sector. A conclusion is that the freshness of the topic creates different views of reality and information, where the majority of government refers to a picture of Sweden on a more national level, while the arguments threatening the authority of that view refers to a more global perspective and global problems.
