- The significance of horses for future riding therapists
The aim of this study was to examine how significant future riding therapists' interaction with horses is for how they come to view the importance of the horse in social adaptive work. The data consisted of 25 riding therapy students' essays, in which they had been instructed to describe the horse's importance to themselves from a social, emotional and physical perspective. The data has been interpreted using narrative analysis. Special emphasis was put on the way identities are constructed, and on adopting a life-course perspective. The analysis shows that the informants experience that horses are of great importance to their lives. Moreover, the informants' experience with horses is very positive in general, and horses are a well-integrated part of their lives that impacts their self perception and identity. Differences were noted in how the informants relate to the horse and its importance from a life-course perspective. The study demonstrated that the horse is significant both for the students well-being and mental health, social relations and perceived sense of meaning. (Less)
