- Title: Guitar in time and rhythm.
The purpose of this study is to identify tools for rhythm teaching in guitar education. My research question is: How is rhythm and timing defined and verbalized? The purpose of the study and the research question has resulted in a subquestion which is: What affects the practice of rhythm in guitar playing? Through my research question, I want to gain knowledge about teachers' and guitarists' work with rhythm on their instrument. The purpose of this study is to identify tools for rhythm teaching in guitar education. My research question is: How is rhythm and timing defined and verbalized? The purpose of the study and the research question has resulted in a subquestion which is: What affects the practice of rhythm in guitar playing? Through my research question, I want to gain knowledge about teachers' and guitarists' work with rhythm on their instrument. I present literature that discusses rhythm, terms and use of language and learning. The study was conducted through quality interviews with three guitarists, all of whom are active musicians. Two of the guitarists are educated guitar pedagogues and one has a long experience of guitar teaching. With the research question in mind, combined with subjects that were revealed by the interviews, I present four areas for rhythm learning: technique, genre and tradition, terms and definition and imitation by ear and by sight. In the perspective of these four areas, I discuss the results of my study and link them to the presented literature. In the conclusion I answer the research question and the subquestion. The interviewed guitarists seem to define and verbalize rhythm in different ways depending on genre and musical context. Technique, genre and tradition, terms and definition and imitation by ear and by sight are factors that affect rhythm in guitar playing and they can be used to create tools for a didactic work with rhythm. Teknik, genre och tradition, begrepp och definition samt imitation genom att höra och se är faktorer som påverkar utförandet av rytm inom gitarrspel och de kan användas till att skapa verktyg för ett didaktiskt arbete med rytm. Slutligen ger jag förslag som kan vara föremål för framtida studier inom området. (Less)
