- In the light of a world-wide shortage of helium-3 (3He) a development of novel neutron detector systems (NDS) is necessary. This requires mathematical descriptions of the neutron scattering process in thin films. In this bachelor thesis our aim is to make a probabilistic model of the scattering of a single neutron travelling through a thin film, with main focus on the first scatter occurrence. The thin film is assumed to consists of a material inducing incoherent, elastic scattering. The theoretical distributions of the direction and position of the scattered neutronare computed. Simulated data points, created with Geant4 in the coding
framework of the European Spallation Source (ESS) Detector Group, are used
to test the extracted distributions. Nonparametric one-sample Kolmogorov-
Smirnov tests are performed and support the theoretical densities for the direction of the scattered neutron. Histograms for the distribution of the neutron position appear not to contradict the derived theoretical distribution. The results for the angles could be useful in the development of novel NDS. The results for the neutron position requires additional work, which is left for further research. (Less)
