Abstract
The detention of migrants is a growing global phenomena affecting more and more people; their daily lives and freedom of movement. This study aims to determine who is being detained and more importantly how and due to which processes the idea of the detainee is constructed. The research is conducted within the framework of intersectional theory and the logic of space/place/time. The latter helps to situate the phenomena on both an individual and a more societal level. Through a qualitative content analysis of the field of research, statistics, and reports, predominantly “Alternatives to immigration and asylum detention in the EU: time for implementation”, one can conclude that the overwhelming majority of the detainees are being overlooked... Through a qualitative content analysis of the field of research, statistics, and reports, predominantly “Alternatives to immigration and asylum detention in the EU: time for implementation”, one can conclude that the overwhelming majority of the detainees are being overlooked and rendered nearly invisible. In a circular logic of exclusion, this near-invisibility justifies their being detained. Seeing how detention camps or centers represents a disciplinary measure used by the nation state, it confirms and perpetuates the idea the young, racialized man as a threat to the state through processes of criminalization, gendering and racialization. Through this analysis of exclusionary practices in the nation state by means of the detention industry, the essay further lays bare parallels between citizenship, sovereignty and freedom of movement.
