- Abstract
- A survey on a fire drill site in the municipality of Linköping, has been made in cooperation with the environmental office at the municipality of Linköping. The goal with the survey was to clarify if the fire drill site is a risk to humans and the environment with emphasis on PFOS, perfluorooctane sulfonate. PFOS was used during the second half of the 20th century at fire drill sites as additive in AFFF-fire extinguishers (film-forming foam fire extinguishers). Nowadays PFOS has been replaced by other perfluorinated compounds in fire extinguishers. The aim has been to clarify the possible distribution of PFOS at the fire drill site, and if this is a risk for humans and the environment. The survey has shown that PFOS has been used less... (More)

The survey has shown that PFOS has been used less frequently at the fire drill site than expected. It was shown that the fire drill area previously was used by the Swedish Armed Forces for chemical warfare practice. This was before firefighters took over. The Swedish Armed Forces used napalm and tear gas among other chemicals in the area. The former fire drill site is located on a so-called chemical platform which has not been maintained during the past decades. The area was classified as high risk (class 2) based on the impact on the environment. This conclusion was based on the MIFO methodology (methodology for inventory of contaminated sites) which is used in Sweden for risk assessment of contaminated sites. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
