- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine the experiences regarding the work with EU-migrants among social workers in the nonprofit sector, whom comes in contact with the phenomenon. Furthermore, we made a choice by including only social workers in the nonprofit sector as respondents, whereas in previous research it has been made clear that these were representative as a majority of support and assistance/help to EU-migrants. The interviewed social workers describe that their experience is that many of the migrants find themselves trapped as they more often lack not only the experience and education, but also suffer due to language barriers, therefore forcing them into begging in order to survive. The lack of a well organized municipal welfare for this group has on the other hand lead to non-profit organizations acting flagship in the support of EU-migrants arriving in Sweden. According to the respondents, their organizations provide the homeless EU-migrants with food, clothes and shelter. Moreover, the respondents describe the work with the EU-migrants as important but challenging - there is a lot of resistance which affect their work. The resistance comes on various shapes and sizes, but the most mentioned by the respondents are the language, shortage of resource and resistance from the public. Moreover, our respondents have concluded that the responsibility of support lies not only on a municipal level, but stretches across the entire European Union as a whole. Another thing that is heavily emphasized is the fact that levels of co-ordination and assistance vary greatly depending on the area or sector of operation wherein the people of need reside. (Less)
