- Abstract
- The Roma people have historically been marginalised in the Swedish society. Ex-cluded from the majority and differentiated by their lifestyle many today are with-out work. In this essay it’s the Roma women, “romni”, in the relation to their work situation who are main area of interest. Using Carol Lee Bacchis problem analysis “What’s the problem represented to be?” and a post-colonial feminist theory, based primarily on Paulina de los Reyes and Diana Mulinari, and the concept of “the Other, the essay attempts to answer the posed question concerning how the Roma women’s relation to work and unemployment are represented. - The Roma people have historically been marginalised in the Swedish society. Ex-cluded from the majority and differentiated by their lifestyle many today are with-out work. These discourses are based on an understanding of the Roma as different from the majority in Sweden and the other are based on a willingness to attempt to uphold the Roma’s right to work. The analysis ultimately shows that the apparent solution - in the form of en-trepreneurship – is a quick fix rather than an endeavour to work antidiscrimination in the form of social connection into the solution.
