Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the Swedish prostitution law that makes it illegal to buy sexual services but legal to sell them. More specifically the aim was to find out the perceptions and attitudes of social workers in regards to the Sex Purchase Act which was enacted in 1999 and was first of its kind in the world. We carried out qualitative interviews in three larger Swedish municipalities where we interviewed five social workers who had knowledge and experience in work-ing with women in prostitution. The analysis was based on two different themes, one focusing on underlying factors that might lead women into prostitution either by force or willingly. The other theme was focusing on the social workers attitudes and perceptions on... (More)

The other theme was focusing on the social workers attitudes and perceptions on the Sex Purchase Act and its advantages and disadvantages. We found that the attitudes of social workers regarding the law generally was positive and they could not see any advantages to legalize or criminalize prostitu-tion as a whole. We also found that there are lots of different underlying factors to why women end up in prostitution.
