This was done to foremost to improve the transparency, participation and decision-making in the preparatory phase of inter-governmental conferences. At first, it received little attention, but as the convention proceeded more and more were heard about the success at the convention. The narrative was changed once again, when the proposed was rejected in referendums in France and the Netherlands and less and less was heard of the convention. This even though large parts of the proposed constitution were still adapted in the Lisbon treaty in 2009. This essay is investigating the Convention on the Future of Europe from a stancepoint of democratic legitimacy and how this was achieved at the convention. This is used by applying a theory normally used for studying democracy within political parties. The results from this essay could become even more relevant in a near future as the European union once again is in turmoil with the departure of the United Kingdom and political leaders once again talking about treaty revisions.
